"I accepted Christ as my Saviour and I feel different. Am I saved? What happened?"
This is a question you may ask yourself after being born again in all your excitement. You may not even know what being "born again" means after being born again!
Being born again happens when out of a sincere heart of faith you call upon the name of Jesus to save you from your sins, and you receive the grace of God. It is also known as "getting saved" or "being saved" by Jesus.
The grace of God you received is forgiveness of your sins, and you are completely cleansed. Read these verses from the Bible as a starting point:
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
Romans 10:9-10, 13
This explains that if you confess Jesus with your mouth, and believe in His resurrection from the dead with your heart, you will be saved from death and hell. The Bible states in these next two verses that you are saved by faith and the grace that you receive, and that it is not based on anything you have done - meaning, you cannot do "good works" or "be a moral person" to be saved:
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Ephesians 2:8-9
Finally, these verses explain that you have been taken out of the power of darkness, and are now in the kingdom of Jesus Christ spiritually:
"Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:"
Colossians 1:12-14
Notice that verse fourteen of Colossians says that you are redeemed through the blood of the Son of God, and that you have forgiveness of sins. That's it, my friend! You have been forgiven of everything evil thing you have ever done! You have been forgiven for every evil thought you have ever had!
And that forgiveness comes straight from God Himself! Hallelujah!
It gets even better, however, and this is where being born again comes into play. The Bible states this:
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
2 Corinthians 5:17
You are now a completely new creature, or creation, in Jesus Christ. You are no longer the same rotten sinner you were before who had no forgiveness.
You are now a sinners saved by the grace of God through faith in His Son Jesus Christ! With your salvation, it works just like being born the first time. When you were born into this world as a little baby, you cried for milk, you crawled around on your hands and feet, and you stuck things in your mouth trying to figure out what they were. You needed other people to raise you up and teach you, so that you could learn to walk, talk, and how to act.
Your new life in Christ is exactly the same way! The Bible calls you a new born babe:
"As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:"
1 Peter 2:2
As this verse states, you need the sincere milk of the word right away. What is that word? It is the Holy Bible, and I hope you have one on your shelf. It is best to read from a physical copy of the Bible. If you do not have one, the you can look up an online Bible or get a Bible app and begin reading.
I absolutely recommend starting at the Gospel of Matthew and reading from there through the whole New Testament. It is okay if you do not understand every verse, or everything that Jesus and the other people in the New Testament are talking about. You will learn as you keep reading and studying! Once you finish the New Testament, I would recommend reading it again and then taking notes on certain verses. Look up good, solid Bible preachers online to hear good sermons to establish your faith.
I would recommend looking up men like Manny Rodriguez from Calvary Baptist Church in Beaufort, South Carolina. He is a solid preacher with a lot of faith in the Holy Scriptures, and sound doctrine about the Bible. You need saved, born again men who will build up your faith, and strengthen you in your new life with Jesus Christ. Use Pastor Manny as a starting point, and then find men like Manny who are strong on the Bible and on the doctrines of the Bible to train you in what God wants you to know.
Read these verses:
"In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;"
Titus 1:2-3
In Titus above, it says that God has "manifested his word" through preaching. This is how you are taught and instructed about the Word of God, the Bible.
This is the easy part to explain. The part that may seem hard, but that you will learn even more quickly, is that you have the ultimate teacher inside of you. That man I recommended, Manny Rodriguez, has that same teacher inside of him.
That teacher's name is the Holy Spirit, also called the Holy Ghost in the King James Version of the Bible, and that is God's Spirit dwelling inside of you.
That's right, my new brother or sister in Christ! You literally have the Spirit of God, the Creator of the universe, dwelling in you after your salvation! Isn't that amazing? Well our God is amazing, my friend. Our Lord Jesus Christ says in the Bible that the Holy Spirit shall teach you all things:
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
John 14:26
This Holy Ghost teaches you the Bible and comforts you in times of affliction. The presence of the Holy Ghost inside of you is the evidence that you are sealed by God with eternal life, and that you shall rise from the dead when Christ returns:
"Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts."
2 Corinthians 1:21-22
"And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."
Ephesians 4:30
Now you should be established in your new birth by what you have read so far, and you should have your bearings. So remember - you have been forgiven of your sins, you are going to Heaven, you have eternal life, you have the Holy Spirit of God inside of you, and you need to learn from good pastors. Also, the Bible commands that we need to assemble ourselves together - this means finding a good church:
"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
Hebrews 10:25
This can be very hard as we live in dark times, my brother or sister in Christ. Many churches have left the true faith and now live like the world and do not have the Holy Spirit in them. But if you pray to the Lord, He will send you to a good church. He will introduce you to good brothers and sisters in Christ who will fellowship with you and bring you to a good pastor who cares for your soul.
Finally, my lovely friend, remember these two verses from the Bible:
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness."
2 Timothy 2:15-16
You need to study the Word of God, the Bible, as much as you can. I would recommend reading at least four chapters a day, and even more if you have just been born again. I was reading multiple books of the Bible in one day when I first got saved! I couldn't stop reading it. But as the verses above warn, there are profane and vain babblings that people will try to put into your mind, especially now that you are saved. The devil is real, my friend, and you will learn about him from the Bible. He desires to destroy your faith and lead you away back into the chains of sin. The devil hates that you have been born again, and wants to destroy you more than ever.
Do not let him do it. Trust Jesus Christ. Resist the devil by faith, prayer, and quoting the Word of God, and the devil will flee from you.
Please check out other sections on my site again, such as the section on "Spiritual Deliverance", "My Testimony", or read my blog posts with a fresh set of eyes led by the Holy Spirit. I implore you to stay in God's Word, stay in prayer, and find good pastors to learn from as well as good brothers and sisters to fellowship with.
May God be with you in the power of His Holy Ghost, and in the name of His Son Jesus Christ!
"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure."
